What Is Object Detection and how it works?

We’ve written before about how objects are detected in videos. But what is object detection? Object detection is a computer vision technique used for detecting and identifying objects in images or videos. Its algorithms use machine learning or deep learning to produce the required results. When people look at images or video, they recognize and locate objects in mere instants! Well, object detection does the same through a computer.

Why does Object Detection matter?

Object detection is useful, for example, in surveillance systems, image retrieval systems or even vehicles equipped with driver assistance systems. For vehicles, it increases driver safety, by detecting other vehicles on the road, pedestrians, and even hazards on the road.

How does Object Detection work?

1) Object Detection Using Deep Learning

To get started with object detection using deep learning, there are two key approaches possible:

  • Creating and training a custom object detector: For this approach, a network architecture needs to be designed to learn the features for objects of interest. It requires a large set of labeled data for the training and a lot of time.
  • Using a pre-trained object detector: This approach uses an already trained algorithm which is then fine-tuned for the specific needs of your application. This method provides faster results because the object detector has already been trained with huge amounts of relevant data.

2) Object Detection Using Machine Learning

Machine learning can also be used for object detection, although it might be more time consuming since you will need to manually teach your algorithm to detect specific objects. You can also choose to start with a pre-trained object detector instead of creating a custom one.

Deep Learning vs Machine Learning Object Detection

When choosing between one of these options, you need to consider your resources and goals, to find the solution that better suits you. If you have a powerful GPU and a big amount of labeled training data, you might want to choose Deep Learning. In case you don’t have those, then, Machine Learning might be the best solution for you.
